A complete census of the Waterbirds of the Upper Colne Valley: 3,372 counted of which 1,702 Coot!

Unprecedented temperatures today for Christmas Week, with warm southerly winds from North Africa pushing thermometers to beyond a sultry 15 degrees C! I took the opportunity to fully census the waterbirds of the Upper Colne Valley - a staggering 3,372 being counted including a whopping 1,709 Coot - over half the total!

The best winter in UK for SHORT-EARED OWLS in ages, Hertfordshire currently boasting at least 12...

We currently have at least 12 SHORT-EARED OWLS wintering in the county, with 3 at Cole Green Tip, near Welwyn Garden City, 2 near Radlett, 1 at Therfield Heath and the 5 at Heartwood Forest, Sandridge - the largest influx into the county in at least 15 years. The most reliable are those present at Heartwood Forest, performing virtually daily from midday through to 1530 hours......
