LESSER SPOT on territory
After receiving regular reports of a male LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER in Bishop's Stortford, I visited this morning and was pleasantly surprised. The bird flew in to its favourite dead tree at around 10am and spent the next two hours on site, allowing me to improve on my previous photographs of the species....
The 'favourite' tree on the island
busy excavating a new hole....
right next to one it excavated last week
The bird has now been seen daily for the past three weeks and seems to spend considerable time in the area. Today, it was advertising itself with its loud, piercing 'kee-kee-kee' notes about once every 20 minutes.
